“To learn is to enter into a transformation, not merely to accumulate information.” — bell hooks

At Plant en Houtgoed, our work is grounded in an ongoing process of research and learning. Each project is an opportunity to observe, test, and adapt ideas. Rather than applying fixed methods, we develop our research through careful attention, hands-on experimentation, and reflection.

Much of what we do could be seen as a form of inquiry. We explore how care and maintenance can shape landscapes, how ecosystems emerge in unexpected conditions, and how design might support both human and non-human communities. This process happens across our sites, at the farm, and in the field—where thinking and making happen side by side.

To help us focus and evolve this learning, we organize our work into five thematic labs. Each focuses on a conceptual idea, which we test and refine through small-scale experiments. Over time, these experiments help us articulate positions—always provisional, always open to further change.

Our labs:

  • Design by Maintenance / Care soon
  • Tailored Ecosystems soon
  • Novel Ecosystems
  • Mobile & Temporary Ecosystems soon
  • Sheltered Ecosystems soon
