Novel Ecosystems

This research explores how to design, establish, and guide valuable, healthy, and relevant ecosystems that integrate biodiversity ambitions with aesthetic and user-focused qualities. It aims to reinforce the broader nature reserve network by activating spaces where conservation is not the main priority—establishing a strong ecological base-layer that embeds and connects protected areas.

A key approach is working with the biodiversity that naturally emerges on-site, understanding the often challenging site-specific growing conditions, and adapting to them. This includes responding to climate change and fostering resilience in evolving landscapes.

Central to this research is understanding how these novel, human-made ecosystems contribute to the local green-blue network and enhance biodiversity. By deeply engaging with ecological systems, it examines how urban ecosystems can be designed, established, nurtured, and sustained over time.
