Mobile Forest for Kortrijk: Nature as a Driver of Urban Renewal

As part of the redevelopment of Kortrijk’s pedestrian shopping district, the City of Kortrijk, 51N4E, and Plant en Houtgoed developed a series of temporary interventions that placed nature and public use at the forefront. Through workshops, surveys, and on-site testing at locations like Grote Kring and Veemarkt, new forms of public space were explored.

At the heart of these experiments was a mobile forest: a temporary green installation that transformed paved urban areas into a natural oasis. Within this setting, space was created for rest, social interaction, play, and temporary hospitality. In parallel, more permanent measures such as depaving and greening of key locations were initiated.

Vegetation Strategy: Temporary Ecosystems with Lasting Impact

The forest was composed of native shrubs and a layered understory of forest flora, selected and cultivated at Plant en Houtgoed’s test site in Overijse. These mobile ecosystems are the outcome of years of experimentation with temporary nature interventions that offer real ecological value. Through their density, biodiversity, and experiential quality, they demonstrate how nature can be both temporary and deeply meaningful within the urban landscape.

Mobiel bos voor Kortrijk: natuur als motor voor stadsvernieuwing

In het kader van de herinrichting van het winkelwandelgebied van Kortrijk ontwikkelden Stad Kortrijk, 51N4E en Plant en Houtgoed een reeks tijdelijke ingrepen die natuur en publiek gebruik centraal stellen. Via workshops, bevragingen en tests op locaties zoals de Grote Kring en Veemarkt werd geëxperimenteerd met nieuwe vormen van publieke ruimte.

Centraal in deze experimenten stond een mobiel bos: een tijdelijke, groene installatie die de verharde stadsruimte tijdelijk omvormde tot een natuurlijke oase. Binnen deze setting werd ruimte gecreëerd voor rust, ontmoeting, spel en tijdelijke horeca. Parallel werd gestart met structurele ingrepen, zoals ontharding en het vergroenen van strategische plekken.

Vegetatiestrategie: tijdelijke ecosystemen met blijvende impact

Het bos werd opgebouwd uit streekeigen struiken en een gelaagde onderlaag van bosflora, geselecteerd en opgekweekt op de testsite van Plant en Houtgoed in Overijse. Deze mobiele ecosystemen vormen het resultaat van jarenlange experimenten rond tijdelijke natuurinterventies met reële ecologische meerwaarde. Door hun densiteit, biodiversiteit en belevingswaarde tonen ze aan hoe natuur tijdelijk én betekenisvol in de stad kan worden gebracht.
