Innovative Approach to Mourning Support and Memorial Culture in the City of Leuven
Over recent years, the City of Leuven has developed a progressive vision to support grief processing and memorial culture within and around its urban cemeteries. As part of this compassionate framework, several rest areas have been established, designed to invite visitors to moments of stillness, reflection, and solace. These spaces accommodate grief in its diverse expressions—individual, collective, implicit, or explicit.
Within this context, Plant en Houtgoed designed and implemented a series of organically shaped wooden platforms as gentle, open infrastructures. These multifunctional structures cater to visitors of all ages, providing seating, play, climbing opportunities, or simply places to rest. This approach acknowledges the need for intergenerational grief processing, offering bereaved parents a welcoming environment to visit cemeteries with siblings, ensuring accessibility and meaningful engagement for all family members.
Constructed from locally sourced, naturally durable oak, the platforms harmonize with the landscape and symbolic character of the cemeteries through their soft contours and natural aesthetics. The result is an approachable, integrated place fostering connection between people, space, and memory.
Stad Leuven ontwikkelde de voorbije jaren een vooruitstrevende visie rond het ondersteunen van rouwverwerking en herinneringscultuur op en rond haar stedelijke begraafplaatsen. Als onderdeel van deze zorgzame benadering worden op verschillende locaties rustpunten ingericht die de bezoeker uitnodigen tot verstilling, reflectie en troost. Deze plekken bieden ruimte aan rouw in al haar vormen – individueel, collectief, impliciet of uitgesproken.
Plant en Houtgoed ontwierp en realiseerde voor deze context een reeks organisch vormgegeven vlonders als zachte en open infrastructuren. Ze zijn bewust multifunctioneel opgevat: zowel volwassenen als kinderen vinden er een plek om te zitten, te spelen, te klauteren of eenvoudigweg tot rust te komen. Deze aanpak erkent de nood aan intergenerationele rouwverwerking en biedt ouders die een kind verloren hebben de mogelijkheid om het kerkhof te bezoeken met broertjes of zusjes in een omgeving die ook voor hen toegankelijk en beleefbaar is.
De vlonders zijn vervaardigd uit lokaal geoogst, van nature duurzaam eikenhout en sluiten met hun zachte lijnen en natuurlijke uitstraling aan bij het landschappelijke en symbolische karakter van de begraafplaatsen. Zo ontstaat een laagdrempelige, geïntegreerde plek van verbinding tussen mens, ruimte en herinnering.
