Lebeau

As part of the temporary activation of a vacant retail space in Brussels (Rue Lebeau), Plant en Houtgoed developed an innovative indoor ecosystem that served as an experimental hub for nature, art, and collaboration. Under the name Lebeau, the site was repurposed into a versatile space for artist studios, coworking, exhibitions, and events—complemented by a public plant shop, all set within a living, green environment.

The entire building was transformed into a green oasis, inspired by a wide range of (sub)tropical biotopes from around the world. This temporary project served as a test case for the ecological and aesthetic potential of plant communities in interior spaces.

Experiments included:

• Aquatic ecosystems and wetland flora from Madagascar

• Epiphytic installations of bromeliads and orchids from Central and South America

• Arid habitats with African euphorbias and succulents

• Shaded microclimates with palms and understory plants from tropical rainforests

In addition to plant selection, the project explored how growing conditions could be influenced through lighting, humidity, and substrate choices. It tested the resilience and adaptability of various species, while also examining how vegetation can function as a defining visual and spatial design element.

Lebeau demonstrates how indoor spaces can act as full-fledged ecological environments and highlights the role of nature in repurposing and revitalizing vacant urban properties. The space became an invitation to imagine new ways of living—both with each other and with plants.

Lebeau: een experimenteel indoor-ecosysteem als tijdelijke stadsoase

In het kader van de tijdelijke activering van een leegstaand winkelpand in de Lebeaustraat in Brussel ontwikkelde Plant en Houtgoed een innovatief indoor-ecosysteem dat fungeerde als experimentele broedplaats voor natuur, kunst en samenwerking. Onder de noemer Lebeau werd de site herbestemd tot een veelzijdige plek voor kunstenaarsateliers, coworking, tentoonstellingen en events, aangevuld met een publieke plantenwinkel – allemaal ingebed in een levend, groen decor.

Het volledige gebouw werd getransformeerd tot een groene oase, opgebouwd rond een reeks interne ecosystemen die inspiratie haalden uit de meest uiteenlopende (sub)tropische biotopen wereldwijd. Deze tijdelijke ingreep vormde een experimentele testcase voor de ecologische en esthetische potentie van plantengemeenschappen in binnenruimtes.

Zo werd geëxperimenteerd met:

• Aquatische ecosystemen en moerasflora uit Madagascar;
• Epifytische installaties van bromelia’s en orchideeën uit Midden- en Zuid-Amerika;
• Aride habitats met Afrikaanse euphorbia’s en vetplanten;
• Schaduwrijke microklimaten op basis van palmsoorten en onderbegroeiing uit tropisch regenwoud.

Naast de plantenselectie werd ook onderzocht hoe groeiomstandigheden bijgestuurd kunnen worden via lichtsturing, luchtvochtigheid en substraatkeuze. Het project testte de resiliëntie en aanpasbaarheid van uiteenlopende soorten, maar onderzocht ook hoe vegetaties kunnen worden ingezet als beeldbepalend en ruimtevormend ontwerpelement.

Lebeau toont hoe binnenruimtes als volwaardige ecologische dragers kunnen functioneren en onderstreept de rol van natuur in de herbestemming en herwaardering van stedelijke leegstand. De ruimte werd zo een uitnodiging tot een andere manier van samenleven – met elkaar én met planten.
