A Mobile Forest as Scenography: Reprogramming Theaterplatz in Basel
For the heavily paved Theaterplatz and Pyramid Square in Basel, a temporary nature installation was developed to explore the potential of green interventions in a highly mineral urban context. Over six months the open, stony expanse underwent a radical transformation: it became a vibrant, layered biotope centered on nature experience, relaxation, and spontaneous encounters.
The intervention created a network of green rooms and atmospheric pockets, each with its own programmatic use. This not only reshaped the spatial perception of the square but also redefined the relationship between people, space, and nature. The project served as an experimental platform for the surrounding cultural institutions of the Theaterplatz Quarter, who used the temporary garden for performances, talks, and informal gatherings—turning the installation into an active laboratory for urban nature and social interaction.
Vegetation Strategy: A Mobile Forest for Basel
The vegetation concept was based on a mobile forest, composed of plant species native to the Basel region. This contextual planting reinforced a sense of familiarity and rootedness in the local ecology, while the temporary nature of the project allowed room for experimentation and adaptability.
With a layered structure of trees, shrubs, and groundcover, the installation provided both shelter for visitors and ecological value. The dense vegetation created microclimates and niches for birds, insects, and other fauna. The project demonstrated how even short-term nature interventions can meaningfully enhance the social and ecological quality of public space.
Een tijdelijk bos als scenografie: herprogrammering van het Theaterplein in Basel
Voor het sterk verharde Theaterplein en Pyramideplein in Basel werd een tijdelijke natuurinstallatie ontwikkeld die het potentieel van groene ingrepen in een uiterst minerale stedelijke context verkent. Gedurende zes maanden, van 4 mei tot 30 oktober, onderging het plein een radicale transformatie: de open, stenige vlakte veranderde in een levendige en gelaagd biotoop, waarin natuurbeleving, rust en spontane ontmoeting centraal stonden.
De interventie creëerde een netwerk van groene kamers en atmosferische pockets, elk met een eigen programmatische invulling, waarmee niet alleen het ruimtelijk aanvoelen van het plein werd gewijzigd, maar ook de relatie tussen mens, ruimte en natuur werd herschreven. Het project fungeerde als experimentele ruimte voor de omliggende culturele instellingen van het Theaterplatz-Quartier, die de tijdelijke tuin benutten voor voorstellingen, gesprekken en informele bijeenkomsten. Zo werd de installatie een actief laboratorium voor stedelijke natuur en sociale interactie.
Vegetatiestrategie: een mobiel bos voor Basel
De vegetatiestrategie vertrok vanuit het idee van een mobiel bos, opgebouwd uit plantensoorten die van nature voorkomen in de regio rond Basel. Deze contextuele beplanting versterkt het gevoel van herkenning en verankering in de plaatselijke ecologie, terwijl het tijdelijke karakter ruimte laat voor experiment en aanpassing.
Door te kiezen voor een gelaagde opbouw met struiken, ondervegetatie en bomen ontstond een structuur die niet alleen ruimte en beschutting bood aan bezoekers, maar ook ecologische waarde genereerde. De densiteit van de vegetatie creëerde microklimaten en ecologische niches waarin ook stadsvogels, insecten en andere fauna zich tijdelijk konden vestigen. De installatie toont aan hoe zelfs kortstondige natuurinterventies fundamenteel kunnen bijdragen aan de kwaliteit en betekenis van publieke ruimte, zowel op sociaal als ecologisch vlak.
