Molenhof Leuven – An Inclusive and Biodiverse Outdoor Space for Rest, Social Connection and Nature Experience
For the outdoor space of the Molenhof site in Leuven—comprising 90 service flats and 34 assisted-living units—a landscape design was developed that prioritises tranquillity, social interaction, and nature engagement. The garden is composed as a sequence of “garden rooms,” each with its own atmosphere and function, tailored to the diverse needs and users of the site.
Adjacent to the cafeteria lies a lively social area with a terrace framed by flowering borders, shrubs, and trees. Strategically placed seating and a petanque court make this zone inviting for both relaxation and interaction. A second garden room focuses on play and exploration, and is ecologically structured with wildflower meadows, shrub layers, and natural play elements. A centrally located gazebo offers shelter and serves as a meeting point for residents, visitors, and neighbours.
The garden rooms are enclosed by native and site-adapted planting that not only enhances ecological value, but also softens built infrastructure and fosters visual calm. Scattered throughout the site, smaller green zones create biodiversity hotspots, pleasant microclimates, and multi-sensory experiences.
The planting strategy introduces seasonal rhythms and incorporates a dynamic palette of flowering borders, meadow patches, shrub edges, and extensive green roofs planted with drought-tolerant species. Through a “design by maintenance” approach, these elements evolve organically into resilient ecosystems. At the same time, residents are encouraged to engage through participatory stewardship.
With this design, Molenhof positions itself as a model for how care environments can actively reconnect people with nature—yielding positive outcomes for well-being, biodiversity, and community cohesion.

Voor de buitenruimte van de Molenhof-site in Leuven, bestaande uit 90 serviceflats en 34 assistentiewoningen, werd een landschapsontwerp ontwikkeld dat inzet op rust, sociale interactie en natuurbeleving. De tuin is opgebouwd als een reeks tuinkamers, elk met een eigen sfeer en functie, gericht op diverse gebruikers en noden.
Grenzend aan de cafetaria ligt een levendige verblijfszone met een terras omgeven door bloeiende borders, struiken en bomen. Strategisch geplaatste zitplekken en een petanquebaan maken deze zone aantrekkelijk voor ontspanning en ontmoeting. Een tweede tuinruimte richt zich op spel en exploratie en werd ecologisch ingericht met hooilandlobben, struweelstructuren en natuurlijke speelelementen. Een geïntegreerd prieel biedt beschutting en fungeert als ontmoetingsplek voor bewoners, bezoekers en buurtbewoners.
De tuinkamers worden begrensd door inheemse en standplaatsgeschikte beplanting die niet enkel een ecologische meerwaarde biedt, maar ook infrastructuurelementen verzacht en visuele rust creëert. Verspreid over de site zorgen kleinere groenzones voor biodiversiteit, aangename microklimaten en zintuiglijke ervaringen.
De vegetatiestrategie volgt het ritme van de seizoenen en integreert een dynamisch palet van bloemrijke borders, hooilandpatches, struweelranden en extensieve groendaken met droogteresistente soorten. Door het hanteren van een ‘design by maintenance’-benadering ontwikkelen deze zich organisch tot veerkrachtige ecosystemen. Tegelijk wordt ruimte geboden voor betrokkenheid van bewoners, via participatief beheer en informele educatie.
Molenhof positioneert zich hiermee als voorbeeld van hoe zorgomgevingen een actieve rol kunnen spelen in het verbinden van mens en natuur — met positieve effecten op welzijn, biodiversiteit en gemeenschapsvorming.
