Paika – A Therapeutic Nature-Based Garden for Child Psychiatry in Brussels
Paika, a division of the University Hospital Brussels, provides both outpatient and residential care for children and adolescents dealing with psychiatric challenges. For its Brussels location, Plant en Houtgoed designed a nature-oriented outdoor space that directly supports the therapeutic mission of the organization—a setting where children can play, find calm, and simply be children.
The site’s natural topography and existing tree framework were carefully preserved and integrated to shape a playful, green environment. Across the grounds, a range of zones support active, social, and contemplative play. Features such as a swing bench, seating circle, lounging meadow, “whisper tent,” and small performance stages make the garden equally valuable for therapy sessions and group activities.
Planting schemes include flowering meadows and structured wildflower borders, complemented by targeted vegetation that attracts insects and fosters biodiversity. This sensory-rich landscape transitions into a denser woodland area composed of native species, creating a lively and ecologically diverse setting that feels like a slice of nature within the urban fabric.
Plant en Houtgoed was responsible for both the design and execution of the works.

Paika, een afdeling van het Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel, biedt ambulante en residentiële hulpverlening aan kinderen en jongeren met een kinderpsychiatrische problematiek. Voor de Brusselse site ontwierp Plant en Houtgoed een natuurrijke buitenruimte die inzetbaar is binnen de werking van de organisatie – een plek waar kinderen kunnen spelen, tot rust komen en gewoon even kind mogen zijn.

Het natuurlijke reliëf en het bestaande bomenkader werden maximaal benut om een speelse, groene omgeving te creëren. Verspreid over het terrein vinden we diverse zones voor actief, sociaal en ingetogen spel. Elementen zoals een schommelbank, zitkring, ligweide, fluistertent en podia maken van de tuin ook een waardevolle ruimte voor therapie en groepsmomenten.

De beplanting bestaat uit bloemrijke hooilanden en ruigteborders, aangevuld met gerichte aanplantingen die insectenleven en biodiversiteit stimuleren. Deze zintuigprikkelende vegetatie vloeit geleidelijk over in een versterkte boszone met inheemse flora. Zo ontstaat een levendig, biodivers landschap dat aanvoelt als een stukje natuur midden in de stad.

Plant en Houtgoed stond in voor zowel het ontwerp als voor de aanleg van de site.
