Skechers Luik
For the new Skechers logistics hub in Herstal — currently the largest logistics facility in Belgium — Plant en Houtgoed developed an outdoor environment that balances sustainable ambitions with the demands of high-efficiency operations.
Extensive sheep grazing is used to manage the vast embankments in an ecologically responsible way. This approach introduces a living, dynamic element into the hard industrial landscape, softening its appearance and atmosphere.
A central feature is a seating pontoon with integrated benches placed in a large multifunctional water basin. This space offers employees a green, tranquil spot to relax and reconnect with nature. Surrounding slopes are actively managed by the grazing flock, which remains visibly present on site and is cared for by on-site staff.
The management strategy combines targeted seeding and planting, fencing to direct grazing patterns, and the use of sheep as ecological stewards. This vegetative approach creates rich biodiversity within the site and transforms typically neglected buffer zones into ecologically meaningful landscapes.
The result is a logistics hub where ecological value and workplace experience are enhanced in tandem — demonstrating how industry and nature can coexist within a resilient spatial framework.
